Why? Just Why?

This was one of the recipes I just had to try! Mid-Century kitchens had some very odd combinations. This recipe has a very unusual combination. Bananas and ham – okay maybe. Add cheese? That’s strange.

So the recipe itself is easy to put together. I used sliced ham instead of diced, mostly because I bought a sliced ham and was running short on time!

You layer the bananas with butter and mustard, then top with the ham. Then cheese and bread crumbs.

It smells bad when cooking, opening the oven I got a very strong whiff of the bananas and the mustard. These things are not meant to go together!

It tastes worse than it smells. I mean really, these things are not meant to go together!

If you are having someone over for dinner that you don’t like – serve this. The mushy bananas make it impossible to eat the ham without getting them involved.

I don’t know what they were thinking when they made this recipe, but – why? Just why!?!

BANANA HAM CASSEROLE WITH CHEESE SAUCE

1 ½ Tablespoons Butter

2 ½ Tablespoons Flour

¾ Cup milk

1 ½ Cups Grated Cheddar Cheese

4 Yellow Bananas, Peeled

1 ½ Tablespoons Melted Butter

1 Tablespoons Yellow Mustard

1 Cup Diced Ham

½ Cup Bread Crumbs

Start heating oven to 350 degrees. In saucepan, melt 1 ½ Tablespoons butter, gradually stir in flour and milk. Add cheese, cook over low heat until cheese is melted – stirring constantly.

In a greased shallow casserole dish arrange bananas; brush with melted remaining butter. Spread with mustard. Top with ham and then cheese sauce. Sprinkle bread crumbs over top. Bake 30 minutes.
