Very Boozy Cocktail

You always hear about Mint Julep during horse races, especially the Kentucky Derby. I always think it sounds interesting, but have never had one before. Partly because I am not a huge fan of whiskey and bourbon.

I made my simple syrup by combining boiling water with syrup, about a three to one ratio. The water has to be hot for the sugar to dissolve. Once dissolved, the syrup is thickened, but not too thick, you can still poor it.

The mint leaves I picked from my backyard. We have a plethora of herbs and spices planted in the garden. I love that I can go to my backyard for freshness in any recipe.

I also added ice to my cocktails. My alcohol was room temperature and it just seemed like chilled was the way to go. I am not sure if that is how they serve it at the Kentucky Derby, but I thought the ice was needed.

It is indeed very boozy. But, the mint and simple syrup give the strong whisky and bourbon a touch of sweetness.

So while I don’t care for the spirits on their own, I actually really enjoyed the beverage. But you do need to be careful, the sweetness makes it very easy to drink.

MINT JULEP

2 Teaspoons Simple Syrup

6 Medium Mint Leaves

1 Large Jigger Bourbon

1 Pony Whisky

Combine simple syrup and mint leaves in a bar glass. Muddle the leaves in the bottom of the glass. Pour in bourbon, add ice. Pour whiskey over top. Garnish with mint leaves.
