I have seen a lot of “Betty” recipes as I have gone through the recipe cards and cookbooks from the mid century. I wasn’t quite sure what it was, so I was interested in trying this recipe out.

I was thinking it would be something like an apple crisp. It kind of was, but not quite.
The apples are mixed with the bread crumbs. So the bread portion is throughout the dish.

The brown sugar, cinnamon and butter give it a crisp taste and feel.
Topping it with the bread crumbs gives it a crisp feel as well.

The problem arises when you have everything combined.
The apples cook nicely in the 45 minute cooking time. I did opt for the longer cooking time as they did not look quite soft after thirty minutes.

The bread crumb portion was just strange in my opinion.

There were crisp ingredients. But it didn’t really make a crisp.

It really didn’t feel like eating a dessert. It felt like eating apples with some stuff on the side.

I wasn’t impressed.
