If you like onions, you will like this recipe. The steaks are coated in flour and seared to help seal in the flavor. Then the onions are piled on!
I think this would be amazing with a little higher quality steak to be honest. The chuck steak comes out a bit tough – even after the hour cooking time.
This was a disappointment, I really thought the flavor was good. It was just hard to chew!
The tomatoes are a nice touch. They provide a pop of flavor that is needed. The onions cook beautifully and are packed with flavor.
Just maybe use a sirloin . . .
BAKED ONION STEAK
1 Chuck Steak – 2 Pounds
2 Tablespoons All Purpose Flour
½ Teaspoon Salt
¼ Teaspoon Pepper
2 Tablespoons Butter
3 Cups Sliced Onions
2 Cans (16 ounce) Stewed Tomatoes
Heat oven to 500 degrees. Sprinkle steaks on both sides with flour, salt and pepper. Place in a broiler pan, dot with butter and bake for 5 minutes. Turn steak over and bake an additional 5 minutes. Spread onions over meat and bake 10 minutes. Turn oven to 325 degrees. Pile tomatoes on top of steak and bake for 1 hour, basting with pan drippings3 or 4 times.
