Perfect For Brunch

I make a strata every year for Christmas. It has become one of those traditions - it just feels wrong not to do it.

My daughter asked why we only have strata for Christmas, why can’t we have it throughout the year.

Well, I don’t know. . .

I made this strata for dinner. We do breakfast for dinner sometimes.

I used a lovely herbed bread. It had a sour dough base, so was hearty and thick.

I cut off the crusts and used them to make some bread crumbs. The insides of the bread were perfect in the strata. They were hearty enough to hold up to the milk sauce and not get mushy.

For the cheese I used extra sharp cheddar.

The dish was quite lovely. Lots of cheese, lots of egg flavor, and the thickness of the bread.

CHEESE STRATA

12 Slices Bread

1/2 Pound Grated Cheese

4 Eggs, Beaten

2 1/2 Cups Milk

3/4 Teaspoon Salt

1/8 Teaspoon Pepper

1/4 Teaspoon Mustard

Arrange bread and cheese in alternate layers in a greased baking dish. Combine eggs, milk, and seasonings. Pour over bread and cheese. Chill 1 hour. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 1 hour.
