I had a Chex mix like combination in my head when I started this recipe. It was not that.
Like a Chex mix, you combine the cereal with the nuts. This is pretty standard.
The unusual part is the syrup.
The syrup is quite sugary. And very smooth.
Unlike a Chex mix that only covers about half the cereal with the syrup, this recipe has the syrup covering the entirety of the Cheerios.
Baking the mixture gives the cereal a crust of sorts.
It does harden quite nicely, but is still pliable enough to break apart.
The overall flavor is a little sweet, but also a little salty because of the nuts.
So it wasn’t what I was expecting, but I didn’t hate it!
Cheerios Snack Mix
1/2 Cup Packed Brown Sugar
1/2 Cup Dark Corn Syrup
1/4 Cup Butter
1/2 Teaspoon Salt
6 Cups Cheerios Cereal
1 Cup Pecan Halves
1/2 Cup Slivered Almonds
Heat oven to 325 degrees. Butter a jelly roll pan. Heat sugar, syrup, butter, and salt in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in cereal and nuts until well coated. Spread in jelly roll and bake 15 minutes. Cool 10 minutes. Loosen with a metal spatula. Let stand for 1 hour. Store in a covered container.
