Creamy Turnips

We grew turnips in the garden this year. This is a vegetable we have not tried growing before, so I was happy to see that we were able to grow them successfully.



This seemed like the perfect recipe to try out our vegetables.



Turnips have an interesting taste. They have the feel and texture of a potato. They taste a little nutty, a little sweet and quite earthy.



Sautéing the onion and pepper in the butter gives the turnips a nice buttery flavor. You also get a nice amount of the onion and pepper.



For the white sauce I used 2 cups of milk, added to 1/4 cup butter and 1/4 cup flour. I also added a bit of salt and pepper.



The sauce mixed nicely with the vegetables. It thickened very nicely, so the sauce really held up with the vegetables.



The only thing I would change is adding a bit more salt. Not a huge deal, but I think turnips need more salt than the average vegetable.



TURNIPS WITH PEPPER SAUCE

1/2 Cup Chopped Onion

1 Cup Chopped Green Pepper

4 Tablespoons Fat

1 Recipe White Sauce

3 Cups Cooked Turnips


Cook onion and pepper in fat until tender. Add white sauce and turnips and heat thoroughly.
