Classic Comfort Food

Dr James Salisbury is credited with the invention of the Salisbury Steak recipe in the late 1800’s. He was an American doctor who felt that people should eat a meat based diet to promote their health. He felt the steak recipe he created would ease digestive issues.

Since then it has become a staple in the frozen food section. Gravy was also added at some point. Salisbury Steak was also one of the original offering from the TV Dinner craze that began in 1954.

This recipe has been around for a while, but I have never made it quite like this before!

Forming the meat mixture on the bottom of the casserole was new. I have also generally cooked the steaks in the pan with the sauce - kind of like hamburgers.

This recipe treats it like a steak and is closer to the original recipe preparation.

The steak has good flavor, but is very dense. I am not sure what digestive issues this was meant to solve!

I did sauté some mushrooms and make a gravy with them. About a tablespoon of cornstarch mixed with some beef bouillon, then added to the sautéed mushrooms.

My family enjoyed the dish. It took a little time, nut I would say it was worth it.

SALISBURY STEAK

1 1/2 Teaspoons Salt

Pepper to Taste

2 Teaspoons Grated Onion

1 Egg, Beaten

Combine all ingredients, mixing thoroughly. On a buttered shallow baking pan mold the meat into an oblong oval servings about 1 1/4 inch thick each. Brush tops and sides of each steak with butter and place in baking dish. 4. Baked in a 450 degree oven for 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 325 degrees and cook an additional 25 minutes. Serve with sauté ed mushrooms or heated tomato sauce.
